Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is celebrated as one of the great botanical gardens of the world. Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, it showcases the extraordinary richness and diversity of the Cape flora, protecting and nurturing native plant species found nowhere else on Earth.
Established in 1913, Kirstenbosch was the first botanical garden in the world to be devoted to a country's indigenous flora. The garden spans 528 hectares, with 36 hectares cultivated and the remainder a protected natural area extending up the mountain slopes into the Table Mountain National Park.
Visitors can explore the famous Tree Canopy Walkway, known as the "Boomslang", which curves and dips through and over the trees of the Arboretum. The garden also features the Fragrance Garden, the Medicinal Plant Garden, and the spectacular Protea Garden showcasing South Africa's national flower.
During summer months, Kirstenbosch hosts the popular Summer Sunset Concerts, where visitors can enjoy live music performances against the backdrop of the mountain. The garden is also home to diverse birdlife and small mammals, making it a haven for nature lovers.
Open daily from 08:00 to 18:00 (September - March) and 08:00 to 17:00 (April - August).
